Confirming redcurrants
Hello all, my neighbour showed me a plant in her garden today which looked like a redcurrant to me. It had redcurrants hanging off the branches and the leaves looked right but can anyone confirm that the ornamental Ribes don't have similar looking berries. My neighbour can't remember what the flowers looked like and neither of us was brave enough to taste a berry just in case I was wrong. But I just wanted to ask, if the leaves look like redcurrants and the fruits look like redcurrants is there anything that it could be?

It's not dark yet, go and take a photo

She's elderly nut (and her husband is very unwell) so I won't knock on her door now but I'll pop round tomorrow. Looking on the RHS site pretty much confirms to me that it was a redcurrant but I can't believe she's not been eating the berries in the past. I just wondered what the berries look like on the ornamental Ribes. I don't have the ornamental Ribes in my garden so, although I know the flowers, I'm not sure it has fruit (or if they're safe to eat).
A TEENY WEENY PHOTO OF THE LEAVES, FRUIT AND STEM WOULD BE GOOD.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
I think you crossed with my message pansyface. I'm going to give her a knock tomorrow. But I have to say the leaves, fruit and stem are identical to redcurrants. I should have just been brave (stupid?) and eaten one of the berries.
I now see (from the internet) that Ribes sanguineum berries are similar in colour to blueberries. So my neighbour has a redcurrant. She was offering me any fruit from the bush, I bet when I return the birds have cleared the lot
my ornamentals have black berries, they're not particularly tasty but I'm still alive.
I think the strings that red currant hang in are pretty distinctive

I agree nut. They immediately looked like redcurrants in every way. I only hesitated because, even though the bush was clearly visible, she'd not noticed it before and had never eaten any of the fruit. I should have gone with my gut instinct. Thanks nut and pansyface.
