Salt Water to Kill Weeds

Hi There

I hope some one can advise me. I have just had a new lawn laid and left a .6 metre border around the edge. There seems to me a proliferation of fern style weeds particularily on one side. Some are even poping up on the lawn. I have dug them up and found a network of huge roots. Even after this they come back as there seem to be large white egg stlye seeds or pods.

I want to put a weed mesh down and cover with decorative stones on top so I don't need anything to grow in the border and was told if I put boiling water with salt around the border ot will kill all weeds at the root. I am just worried the wasl and water will seep into the lawn and kill that just after I have paid a fortune for it.

Any advice gratefully appreciated.

If your weeds look like this:

then you will find that they will keep coming up in your lawn, whatever you do in your borders, because the roots go very deep - have a look for horsetail or mare's tail on google.

Also, any salt in water that you put on your borders will, in time, leach sideways into your lawn and damage the grass.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thanks for the reply. There are a few of those horsetail around the border but not in the lawn. These are the one in the lawn. There is loads in my neighbour's garden so I think they are spreading to mine.image

Do you have any suggestions on how to kill all weeds in the border without damaging the lawn as I will not be growing anything in the border.

    Any tips really appreciated.

    Best Regards

Use a weed killer which will neutralise when it gets to the soil.
