When buying a tree....

Hi

While browsing the internet I've found conflicting information on which is best when it comes to buying a tree. Some say buy young as they give the best chance of surviving transplant. But others say to get the biggest tree you can afford. Now I'm very confused??!! Either way is it is going to incur some substantial cost so I would like to get it right. Any advice would be gratefully received...

Many thanks

Hi Sven. I would go with the 'buy young' set. It is much easier for the typical amateur gardener to plant and stake a young tree and allow it to settle in and establish than an older one.

I agree with Ladybird.  A young tree will establish better than a  large tree which will struggle for a few years even with lots of water.  Bare rooted trees are also quite cheap if you buy during the winter months.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

    See original post
I was looking at either a Acer Griseum or Parrotia Persica.
