Removing healthy blooms before going on holiday

Hello there!
I'm going on a weeks holiday shortly and I'm sure I heard or read somewhere that it's a good idea to remove healthy blooms from plants - pelargoniums in my case - just before you go away rather than just deadheading. I'm assuming it's to ensure your garden is full of new blooms on your return. Is this common practice - seems almost shameful but if it works, why not?? Advice please
