Is this a strawberry plant?

Hi all,

I bought some Mount Everest climbing strawberry seeds from eBay and now have a 6 foot plant. The trouble is it looks nothing like the pictures I can find and am wondering if I was duped. Does this look like a strawberry plant to anyone here?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Dan. Definitely not strawberries. They look like weeds.

They look very much like Chenopodium album (aka fat hen & goosefoot amongst others.)  It's a weed which seeds exteremely freely (thousands from one plant) although it is grown as a food in India.  Not strawberries, unfortunately.

Ah, thanks for your answers. I better pull them up asap. That'll teach me not to support my local garden centre.

To be fair, strawberry seeds are not that easy to germinate and the fat hen seeds may have been in the compost, so it may not be the GCs fault. image

Is a climbing strawberry anything other than runners trained up a cane?image

Lots of cons on ebay but enough good traders to keep people coming back

I have to say that I have bought lots of plants from various sellers on eBay and I have had nothing but the best of services and super plants I can bring on in my garden. Anything I cannot acquire cheaply from the bigger named growers I search for on eBay - sometimes I'm lucky but other times I'm not. I still regard eBay as one of my garden centres. Whoa sorry folks, looks like I am advertising a well known online auction site, please don't report me! image
