Cherry tree

We bought this tree last year, but when we bought it, there wasn't a label on it. It didn't do very well after we planted it, but this year it is full of fruit. I just wanted to check what kind of cherries these are, and are they edible? Thank you in advance!

They certainly look yummy, Lauraanne!  If birds haven't started eating them I'd guess they are not dessert cherries, but they could well be culinary ones.

To the best of my knowledge no cherries, even ornamental ones, are poisonous though not all taste very nice.  It certainly looks to me like a cherry leaf... did you buy it from a garden centre?  If so, was it in the fruit section?  Does the bark look like a cherry?

  • They look really good don't they?! Ah, well the birds seem to have left well alone, so perhaps they're not too sweet?

It's good to know they're not poisonous, so I'll have to give one a try when they ripen up fully.

We did buy it from a garden centre, but it seemed to be one on its own, I think the label must have come off and someone wasn't quite sure where to put it! The bark does look like a cherry though.

    Thank you for your help.

If they're sour when ripe they'd make a good cherry pie, or jam perhaps.  image

  • I'll try that then. I love cherry pie, and there are certainly plenty of cherries! :)

I'd cover them anyway, the black birds will still like them image
