Lilac bush

We planted a large lilac bush we bought from a garden centre late last summer. We bought a big one as we wanted something that was going to make amoney impact straight away. After planting we got new growth straight away and then this year it's flowered.  However there doesn't seem to be any new growth coming through yet. Is this normal? It just looks bare. There are buds on the canes though so will these start growing now the flowers have bloomed and died off?

It seems to have done things back to front compared to my lilac. i.e. leaves came first followed by flowers. As it was a big shrub you bought it will still be going through a process of settling in. Wait until next year and watch what happens then. I wouldn't be unduly concerned at the moment.

Lilacs take awhile to get going I have found.  They grow quite big over time and this is probably why.  Hungry feeders too.  I wouldn't worry; you have had some flowers this year.  Next year you will have more.  A good dollop of manure now will be good for it.
