May have mowed new turf too soon

Hi just wanted some advice

I had a new lawn laid 11 days ago and the gardener said with the rapid growth I should cut it. Originally it was supposed to be left for 3 Weeks. Its a rolawn so it does say you can cut it sooner on the website

I've done so but think some of the grass hadn't quite seeded as it's pulled it up slightly in patches and there are now a couple of bare patches

Think it may have been too damp in the soil although the grass was dry

It's not terrible but I just wanted advice to prevent further damage and make sure it repairs should I just leave it for a couple of weeks to ensure it roots properly and then seed the patches

Really wish I'd left it now ???? but the contractor said it was ok

Do not cut it until its at least 3 inches high and then only using the highest cut on your machine.

  • I did use the highest settting and it's a new mower. it was over 3 inches. I think it was mainly that the ground was damp so its pulled out. Like I say it's not all over just a couple of patches but as you can probably tell I'm a novice so now stressing that ive ruined my new turf. We've had alot of rain so suspect although the grass was dry the ground underneath wasnt. And like I say the few patches weren't quite rooted properly

I would do what you have suggested then - leave for a couple of weeks and re-seed the bare bits. I doubt you will have ruined your turf and it will recover. image

  • Thank you just needed some reassurance. Difficult isnt it as they say don't let it get too long but then you need to wait for it to seed. Its a bit at the back of my garden which has a neighbours tree over it so it doesnt get as much light.

I should have trusted my instincts and left it a bit longer . O well.

    Thanks for the reassurance

Tut tut DR. Aren't golfers supposed to replace these?
