Dark foliage plants

Hello everyone,

I planted out my dahlias a couple of weeks ago and I keep looking at this dark leaved one thinking I need some hardy dark foliage plants...

I have a dark heuchera but i haven't got a clue about other plants that could fit the bill. I can cope with dividing clumps but i don't want things that pop up all over the place.

So well behaved, 40/60cm wide, roughly same height, dark foliage plants?

thank you

Some hydrangeas have very dark leaves and there's a creepy black grass.

There are some nice dark berberis including a columnar one if you'd like some height. There's a sambucus as well but it might get a bit too big. If you want really quite small there's a beautiful oxalis with almost white pink flowers.

There are some lovely dark red leaved sedums, eg Purple Emperor.

imagePenstemon Husker Red is one of my faves. The leaves turn darker as the plant matures

There's a purple leaved persicaria - https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/152665/Persicaria-microcephala-Red-Dragon-(PBR)/Details - and a ligularia Britt-Marie Crawford.    For low ground cover there's ajuga reptans "Burgundy Glow" and almost black leaved ophiopogon planescapus nigrescens.   You can heck out their cultivation needs on the RHS site.

We have similar problems, too much green. We have Eucomis Sparkling Burgundy. Wonderful colour and the flowers are striking.

  • Fantastic suggestions, thank you very much! Mr Google is helping me find out about all those plants.

I know i've got some dark sedums and ajuga, somewhere... If i remember well the penstemon was in a plug collection... Note, Julie: don't lose dark leaved plants in the borders, you won't notice them. Or maybe i will when they've all bulked up? ?

Time to update my list for GW Live tomorrow (how convenient ?). Any other ideas, please feel free to add your favourites.

I've got a dark leaved Weigela, which if my memory serves is called Ruby or Bristol Ruby.  It has dark pink flowers And I prune after flowering to keep it a reasonable size.

ive also got small purple Cordylines.
