Medlar trees

I have bought a medlar tree which was growing really well and I was so pleased with it. However it has suddenly developed brown raised lumps on the leaves some of which look like spiders because they have little spidery roots coming out of them. I have researched on line and one suggestion was that I put copper fungicide on it. Any ideas before I do this as I do not usually use fungicide  on

anything and don't want to ruin the tree completely.

    Don't off hand know what the leaf problem is, not got my books out at present,, but I can tell you that Copper sulphate (if you can get it) is as safe a fungicide as there is. It will not harm the tree.

    IF IT IS PEAR RUST, OR A SIMILAR RUST SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO QUINCE, HAVE YOU GOT ANY JUNIPER TREES NEARBY? THE RUST NEEDS BOTH PLANTS TO COMPLETE ITS LIFE CYCLE. PICK OFF AND BURN AFFECTED LEAVES AND GET RID OF THE JUNIPER.

    And if this is a new tree I would take it back to the vendor and complain. They should not be selling a tree which is infected with this.

    Thank you for all your help with this. I have taken off all infected leaves, (it looks bald!) and replanted in another area about 2 weeks ago. Had a good look at it yesterday and all new buds forming on it and it looks quite happy. Will obviously take off any infected leaves which come on it but so far so good. Also my neighbour is quite happy for me to take out the juniper tree so good on him. Best wishes. Judith
