Red Ants In Lawn

My lawn is covered in red ant patches, this year seems worse than ever. Is it because of all the rain? How do I get rid of them as it is looking messy particularly when trying to mow.

If you don't mind chemical warfare you can buy ant bait stations which are little covered boxes and only ants get in. They then take the bait back to the nest and once the queen dies after consuming the bait, the colony dies out too.
