The flower does remind me of the Catananche family (although I'm only really familiar with the Amor variety) the leaves are a little shorter than I'm used to so it's a rather tentative suggestion.
It could be an osteospermum, cape daisy.
Could it be a Mesembryanthemum?
I thought osteospermum at first Ceres but I don't think that the leaves are right.
On the whole, mesembryanthemums tend to have leaves like green sausages though there is the odd exception.
thanks everyone, i've had a look at images of all three suggestions but i just can't match the petals to any of them
I'd go with osteospermum akila

Leaves look very osteospermum, but the petals seem wrong for an osteo - these are more rounded and osteo have more petals
Interesting..
Do you have a pic of the whole plant?

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
mmm different petals again to the akila, mine are more spoon shaped. no i don't have another pic unfortunately , my son sent this one over earlier but he's not at the house now (they are in the process of moving in)
