What can I grow under small apple tree?

I've just made the bed under this apple tree slightly larger as it had concrete blocks and stones under it so that I can pop some well rotted manure on here and also to help prevent the ants.  Ignore the turf still there, I've injured my thumb so I'm annoyingly out of action.

What can I grow plant wise underneath? Any ideas?

The tree will do better without having to compete with other plants, so nothing is best! The small bulbs might be a good compromise.

You could grow a few strawberry plants, they are shallow rooting and if you nip back any runners the patch won't become over crowded. Your first strawberry plants will be good for at least three years before needing to replant.
