transforming an old garden

Hello everybody. I was looking for some help as I am a complete novice! I have recently moved into my Grans house and her garden is overgrown half gravel paths and old beds. I am looking to completely revamp it and put down lawns and probably raised beds. has anyone got any ideas as I have tried pulling and digging up the weeds and all of the old stuff that is there.i would love to put some lawn down and paving but have no idea how to get rid of all of the weeds!  should I cover the whole garden with soil or some kind of weed suppressant? or kill everything off with weedkiller?

I will try and get some photos of before and after for everyone! thanks so much for all your help and apologies if this is a stupid question!image

thanks

Tim

Hold off on anything drastic until the experts have had a look.  you don't want to lose any valuable plant s you may have lurking there

Hi TIm. Never ever think that a question is stupid. Everyone started fom page one of the 'How to garden' hand book. This is how we learned - by asking questions and this is how you will learn too The pictures will help us to give advice.

Hello everybody! thanks so much for the responses all ready! good to see people are willing to help out! I've attached two pictures of the garden/wasteland! there has been some pulling up of the weeds but as you can see its looking pretty bare with the gravel etc. it is south facing so gets a lot of sun! it's the first time I've had an outside area so hence the bbq has already been used in the background!any help would be much appreciated but I was thinking some paving/decking with raised borders and some lawn. should be ready in 5 years image

thanks again everyone for the help!

Draw out a plan for your garden then work on areas bit by bit......don't try and do it all in one go. The first things you should deal with are the paths and lawn area and if you need to get rid of a lot of weeds, use your barbeque to lure some friends in with food. A gardening afternoon should get a lot of the weeds sorted providing you don't provide too much beer.

Hire a rotivator to dig over the garden then it will be a question of getting the lawn area ready and it may be a good idea to turf it rather than use seed.....instant lawn and  no chance of the weeds coming back to spoil things. http://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/maintain-the-garden/how-to-prepare-ground-for-a-new-lawn/

Good luck and have fun. You have a blank canvas so go mad.
