Red ants in potato patch
how can you get rid of red ants that are in the ground where vegetables are grown?
many peoples potatoes on the allotment are suffering, and one has had some potato plants die and all are infested with red ants.
i read that they eat the potatoes (maybe something to do with the starch? i heard they are also partial to corn)
obviously boiling water and chemicals cannot be used as they would harm the crops and soil.
any ideas?

Hi Amy. Ants do not eat potatoes. By nesting in the earth around potatoes they create holes - admittedly tiny - but this can make the potato plants unstable. By regular watering of the potatoes and keeping the soil wet and earthed up the ant nest will be constantly disturbed and the ants will probably move away.
