Planting dahlias

Lena NLena N Posts: 189

I have 9 dahlias which I started off in April in my conservatory. They're getting quite big now and I'd like to plant them out, but we are buying a house and will probably move early July. I have a couple of big 50 cm Milano planters. Do you think I could put 3 in each or would that be too small? Ideally I'd like to put them in the ground but won't be able to do that until we've moved.

Many thanks image

mine have be outside in the ground for nearly a month now, so first thing is get them outside in the pots as the cooler weather will slow their growth.

are we talking tuber dahlias or grown from seed this year dahlias?? if from seed then 3 in a pot for a while should be ok, if tubers then you need at least a 10cm gap between the ends of tubers and you'll probably not fit three in a pot that small.

They were grown from tubers and are currently in 2 litre pots. I'll give it a go - perhaps I'll get a couple in the planter instead - as they need more room than they currently have, even if it's only a temporary home for them.

I have so many plants it's going to be a nightmare transplanting them all when we finally move house! image

Hi Aym, thanks  for the warning. I'm planning on putting copper tape around the pots in the hope of keeping the slugs and snails at bay for a while image

Will do Aym - that's if they get a chance to flower before the slime army get to them! image

    Good luck!
