Something eating my Cecile Brunner

Every year my climbing Cecile Brunner starts off flowering beautifully.  After a couple of weeks it is decimated by some kind of bug which strips all the leaves.  You can even see hundreds of caterpillars on the leaves if you look closely.  Any ideas on what and how to treat gratefully received!

Hi cathy. There's no picture as yet.

Just a thought but they might be sawfly larvae.

Its without doubt sawfly larvea. They love roses. If you can squish them or use bug clear. Personally I love squishing them.

  • Thanks, although not sure I could cope with squishing - bad enough doing the blackfly on the broad beans yesterday!!

  • does anyone know if sawfly also like Solomons Seal?  Similar damage to rose.  Also any recommendations for a, preferably organic, spray?  Definately too many to squish.  Mind you, they might get washed off with the amount of rain we've got right now!

Yes they do. Bug clear again seems to work.

  • Thanks - am off to the garden centre now!
