If the midges bite me they seem to go off to warn their mates that I taste 'orrible. My missus, on the other hand, is a midge and other flying beastie magnet. She takes B compound tablets, starting a few days before we travel along with anti-histamine tablets. This definitely reduces the number of times she gets bitten and her reaction to the bites she does suffer.
Avon Skin so Soft is brilliant for detering midges. Mythology has it that British Army squaddies discovered that it repelled bugs, although I haven't seen any explanation of why they were using it in the first place!
I'm a keen angler and we go out after Sea Trout in the dark, all the guys I've met swear by Skin So Soft, I bought loads of the stuff, works for me. Deet based lotions can also work, but it's a hefty chemical that doesn't suit all skins.
This is my basic summer gardening anti mozzie, anti sunburn and anti peastick-in-the-eyeball kit. My drug of choice is Loratadine One-a-Day antihistamine from Tesco. (A great antihistamine because you can still have alcohol as it doesn't interact like other A-Hs do....win, win).
Boots sell ammonia pens to dab bites but I find tea tree oil is just as good.

It's like builders, and I bet some male gardeners, wearing tights in the winter
And policemen B3......
Sent the undergardener out to water the pots this time. He isn't as tasty as me, apparently.
I'm stuck inside waiting for the Avon jollop to arrive. I hope this wasn't a mass wind-up!
