What you plant will depend on whether it is a north or east coast compared to a west or south coast. On the west coast there are many hedges of a quick growing fuchsia (can't remember name) and also hydrangeas.  Have a look at what's grown in the neighbourhood.

    Gorse  image

That will withstand anything and create a sacrificial shelter belt - you can then plant inside it.

    And somewhere on the hill
Inside the past we hear the bells
    Catching only parts of thoughts
    And fragments of ourselves
    Till we begin
    Again

I too vote for gorse.Though it is highly underestimated now.Did you know that earlier it was treated highly by the peasant farmers because of its value? Gorse acts as a shelter for the other plants especially where animals are concerned.image
