I know hostas will tolerate shade, but what conditions do they actually prefer?
They prefer moist conditions in light to medium shade. They do not care for acid soils
Mine are mostly on a South facing slope with no shade whatsoever, but the soil is always pretty moist which is , IMHO more important than shade.
Mine are in pots in medium shade - light but minimum sun and looking good. I was being greedy and wondering if I could do better.
My hostas seem to thrive in part or dappled shade
They are starting to look good in front of mature ferns. If I can defeat the slugs then they will stay that way
Aye there's the rub
