Does anyone out there know what kind of cactus this is, and how do I propagate it ?

I'v had it quite a few years so thought I should try to get a back up just in case.

I think it is a Schlumbergera.

Take a sharp knife and slice off one of the leaves. Let it dry for 24 hours. Stand cut edge on to gritty compost and let it root. keep it on the dry side or it will rot instead.

  • I thought Schlumbergera was a Christmas/Easter cactus, I've got some of those and this one has got a different leaf. It is flowering now I've only just taken the picture.

It is one of the epiphyllums and they are very easy to propagate. Take a non flowering section at the base. You can either allow it to dry out for several hours before carrying out this procedure or insert the bottom end immediately in some sharply drained compost (sand and gritty mix). Water to settle in and then leave it only adding water when it becomes completely dry.
