Yesterday we bought a pH meter - £12 from Dobbies - so I tried it out all over the yard when we got home. When we came here in 1985 ADAS came and checked the land and one thing they found was that the pH was 4.5, seriously acid. The land has had livestock on it and latterly has been cultivated, but it was a nice surprise to find almost was in the yellow area. Unfortunately I cannot see the numbers but I imagine the three coloured zones cover similar ranges. The one exception was onion rows which were well in the red. The only explanation I can think of for this is that I gave them a mulch of bark chippings.
