How often has Joe been seen with his sleeves rolled up, hands earthy, digging and planting? Even when he did his allotment bit a few years ago he was only dealing with a small area.
On the subject of 'Qualifications or not', having a qualification in a subject doesn't automatically mean that everything you do or say will be right, or that you can actually put the subject across to others.
The best teacher I ever had, had 'only' been to teacher training college and didn't have a university degree or anything similar. The worst was the head of department to that same teacher, and although hugely qualified, stuggled to connect with pupils.
I find Joe Swift's whole demeanour patronising in the extreme. I know he's a designer and always looking for new ideas and there's nothing wrong with that. There is a big difference though between that and his sneering attitude in last years series of GW towards anything traditional such as conventional borders and 'sin-of-sins' hanging baskets.
Geum: had no idea Clive Swift was his dad, now you've mentioned it I can really see the family resemblance.
Regarding qualifications, aren't we all still learning new stuff? I've gained so much knowledge on this lovely forum from people with years of experience, never crossed my mind to ask if they have fancy letters after their name.
I had to study botany and horticulture as part of my floristry course many years ago but I'm wearing the dunce's cap compared to some folk on here.
How about this? I don't like gardening programmes.
One has to put up with an hour of pratronising old toot and ferret about for the minute and a half that's relevant to your particular problem, conditions, taste.... I'd sooner poke my eyes out with a pointy stick.
Missed it yesterday as I was busy in my own garden. Was it worth catching up on iPlayer?
I find I have to stick up for Joe Swift. He makes his living running a gardening business.
" those who can :do" springs to mind.
Re qualifications: when I went back to college to study garden design, a client of mine said " I bought a house with an empty garden, so I'm a designer"
I replied " I've sown bits of fabric together : that doesn't make me Coco Chanel"

What can you expect from the son of a Hyacinth?

" fair point" he said.
I wonder how he would react if somebody asked if he was "Sheridan", Hyacinth Bucket's son.
He will be henceforth forever 'Sheridan'!
......room for a pony.
