Don't know what tree this is - please help

imageimageimageimageHello I have a standard tree in a pot but do not know what it is, it is 4ft tall , the delicate leaves are about 1cm ( ½inch) and it is just starting (pics taken may 11th- Manchester ) to purple flower - I would be grateful for suggetstions on what plant it is, I initially thought it was a lilac but the leaves seem too small - please help

I think you're right, lilac, not sure which one, 'Palibin' maybe,

    In the sticks near Peterborough

It certainly looks like a lilac flower BUT the leaves  are only ½ inch across

I have a lilac 'Primrose' that has leaves that small, and mine is just coming into flower (just outside Manchester), so my bet is lilac too. My lilac is 10 years old and only 9 ft tall, so maybe the slower growing lilacs have smaller leaves?

I think lilac too, probably Paliban.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
