What's living on my lawn?

I discovered today an infestation of very skinny worms on my lawn. They were about 7cm long, yellowish in colour and were concentrated on bare patches. They were waving their heads (or tails) around in the air and when I picked one up it wound itself up into little coils.

Unfortunately I only took video and can't post it here.

Please tell me if these little beasts have caused the bare patches and if I need to get rid of them or if they are not responsible and should be allowed to live.

just had a quick google and 'sod webworm' might be your culprit

Thanks sanjy67 but unfortunately they're not the culprits. The ones on the lawn are just a bit thicker than a hair. They look like some kind of nematode but I'm not sure nematodes get that long. I'll have to try and take a photo, that'd be more useful than my description
