Does my fig tree look ok?
in Fruit & veg
Hi all
Recently bought a fig tree... I'm new to all of this and accepted that the tree was just as it should be. Until I went to Lidl the other day and saw fig trees for sale there which looked far more ... err ... substantial and alive!
Mine is a 'Brown Turkey'.
Here are a couple of photos:
Many thanks
Max

Yours is alive and what's more it's figging!
Someone will be along to advise on potting on and feeding and the like.
Hi Max. Brown Turkey is the tried and tested fig for Britain. Yours looks fine. It needs plenty of room but the roots must be prevented from spreading everywhere. I've heard it suggested that a big hole should be dug with the sides lined with paving slabs and the fig then planted in the middle. Good luck with it.
Hi Max.
Its a baby tree so it isn't going to look too butch at this stage. If you want to be sure of getting ripe figs then you should keep the tree in the greenhouse. Having said that, my outdoor tree produced some ripe fruit last summer which was a surprise. You can grow your fig tree in a large planter or in the ground. As ladybird said, wisdom decrees that the roots should be restricted but that is entirely up to you. Figs in the wild can send their roots where they will.
All my fig trees are in pots, apart from the allotment tree, and that means I can move them about to fill in gaps and make sure they are regularly fed. Feed it as you would any other pot grown shrub.......once a week in summer using an all purpose plant food.
Figs are very easy to grow from cuttings so in late summer you can increase your stock of fig trees and keep one or two in the greenhouse for a couple of seasons to provide fruit whilst the mother tree lives outside looking fabulous.
Looks good. Where did you get it from? I am after one myself
