Blueberry Plant still sleeping (or dead)?

I love growing fruit and veg, for me gardening is much more rewarding when something usable is produced.

As a lover of everything berry, I purchased a small blueberry plant. Unfortunately, whatever I do, I can't seem to get a single leaf to shoot!

The plant has been potted now for around 2 months and still nothing seems to be happening. As we're now in May, I had expected something by now particularly with the weather warming up.

I have tried ericaceous plant feed and mixing pine needles into soil etc.

Help!

It doesn't look too promising. Where are you?

Mine haven't long been in leaf in the home counties but are now in flower.

Where did you get if from? pot or bare root?

I wouldnt feed it until it actually comes to life. Fresh compost usually contains enough food for quite a few weeks of active growth. No. 1 killer of plants is too much love.  Too much fertiliser can burn roots & leaves.

Patience is normally the best thing you can do.

  • It was a general purpose compost with low peat content. I don't have a ph testing kit so can't determine exact acidity. What would you advise? Re-pot or throw away?

    Thanks

  • Thanks Rainbowfish, I'm in Yorkshire...

It does sound like it was the compost. Multipurpose normally contains lime to increase the pH.

If starting again, I saw some lovely blueberry plants of different varieties in my local B&Q. Good sized plants for £5. I had to stop myself from buying more. (currently on 4) Better than I have seen in my local garden centres. As Verdun suggested get a couple of varieties, it will give you get more than double the blueberries.
