Clematis pinching out?

bobloesbobloes Posts: 134

Hi All I have a couple of summer flowering clematis (unfortunately lost the name tag) which I moved last year and they did not do well.  They look as if they are coming good now but I was wondering if there is any benefit from pinching out growing tips, as with annuals, to promote vigour and bushiness?  Thanks. Bob

I've haven't heard about pinching them out but it won't hurt them they should grow from the side shootsimage
  • Bob, if they are Summer flowering clematis you should have cut them hard back in February, not too late to knock them back a bit now.

It will delay the flowering but long term you should have better plants.

Thanks for the thoughts.  I cut them really hard in November so I am hoping that is sufficient.  I think I will not pinch out and see what happens this year and change tack if not particularly good.  Cheers
