    I've taken a few more pictures. Any ideas what it might be?

    It doesn't have any thorns.

    who said privet?

    I think that's the one.

    They get enormous, ours was in the phone wires at one stage.

    Just googled viburnum tinus. The leaves look similar.

    or laurel - knowing the size of the leaves would help.

    V. tinus also has black berries.

    Just a quick comparison from my garden.

    Viburnum tinus.

    And a bit of leggy privet from behind the shed.

     I'm going to stick with my first guess privet.

    I've found large privet tends to lose its leaves unless clipped .
