Hosta help again

Lorna95Lorna95 Posts: 436

Could someone give me some advice, I collected hosta seeds last year from my hosta and wanted to see if  I could grow some from seed. About a month ago I sowed some seeds in to trays of mpc and perlite,  I have some trays in the house and some in a cold greenhouse, they are not showing any signs of life yet,  Have I done something wrong or am I just being impatient. Thank you for any help.

I've germinated hostas. I sow everything fresh (if I can get it fresh), when it's ripe on the plant. Never use heat, mostly outside but may have used cold GH for hostas as they're such slug fodder. It's a few years ago now and my memory isn't reliableimage

Thanks nut, none of mine have come up so not sure if I have done something wrong, just wished some would germinate.image

Throw some grit on top of the pots, put them outside somewhere sheltered and ignore them.   My over winter seeds are mid germination, still some to go. There are always a few that don't so don't feel despondent image

Hi, I've heard great things about growing hostas from your own collected seeds. An old friend told me about a time he did this and every seed came up with a slightly different pattern or colouring (all seeds collected from one plant).

I will have to try this year with my own hostas!

Fingers crossed for yours to germinate! image

There's a good chance that the seeds are dormant and will need a few months of chilling .

Thank nut I will give that ago and see how t goes.

JerryBone I love hostas, I have 80 but that is nothing compared to Hostafan who is a member on here. I would just like to give them ago from seed.

Thanks Darren, maybe I should put a few seeds in the fridge for a while and see how they go, maybe that is wrong, I don't know.image

Wow that's a lot of hostas! I think I have around 9... But I do love my little collection and it will continue to grow! as hostas are never too over priced I always pick them up when I see one that I love!

I've tried many different species in the fridge

Mecanopsis, pulsatila, primula, astrantia- all failed.

I assume they need a good 2 months in the cold.

    They can be addictive Jerrybone

Thanks Darren, maybe I will just sow as soon as I collect the seeds and then they will have the cold winter, I can only try and see what happens.

Blimey Hostafan, another 10, they don't sell many different varieties where I live (Ireland) so I have to order different ones from the UK, why couldn't I have this addiction when I lived in the UK. How many is that now Hostafanimage
