Red Robin

Hi I have recently moved into a new house and inherited some rather neglected trees and shrubs. I have a beautiful Red Robin but it not very full in foilage like the others around my area. Can I rescue it by pruning back? How harsh can i be and when is the best time to do it? Many thanks

I give mine a regular haircut throughout the growing season in an attempt to keep them relatively bushy !  Not very successful as they insist on leaving a long distance between leaf nodes.  I love them though, the one outside my kitchen window is glowing at the mo, I half expect it to radiate heat !
