weed-infestation-on-lawn

We have these weeds which look like small plants or seedings growing throughout our lawn. Each plant is connected below the lawn via vines.  Please can you help with the identification and treament.

They look like suckers from a nearby tree/shrub to me DJJ2 not sure what type, is there a cherry tree nearby?  It looks like there are too many to manually pull them up (scraping away soil and pulling the sucker away from the root system).  Chemical treatment may affect the parent tree unless you try to sever each sucker from the root system connecting it to the tree.  You'll have to be careful not to kill off the surrounding grass if you resort to chemical control, something containing glyphosate will kill them off.  Sorry I'm not much help, maybe someone else on here will have a better option.

Definitely tree suckers. One of the weedkillers made for lawns would deal with them, but it will be a slow job.

They will be discouraged when you mow them off when you do the lawn.  Any that are too tough, you can cut off with seceteurs.

Thank you very much for all your replies which have been helpful. I think we will dig around the whole circumference between the shrubs and the lawn to kill off the main supply to these seedlings via the suckers. Then we can keep the lawn mowed to stop regrowth.

Looks like something I tackled in a border once.

Birds put it there and it suckered everywhere. If you leave any root in it just keeps coming back. Took me so long to get rid of it. Tiny sprig would appear and when pulled was 3/4 ft or root! Pulled up half the plants in the process and had to keep replanting. Every time I thought I had got rid of it another sprig would appear. Hope you can kill it off by regular mowing but not too hopeful image

  • On a simillar note, we have loads of vine like weeds on our lawn, almost buried in the grass. They are all criss crossing over each other and look to be putting little suckers in along the way leading to a root. We did have a fair amount of clover and dandelions this year. I cut the grass very short to help remove them and have just exposed the weeds.

Briffster, if you could post a photo of the weed it would help to id it and therefore relevant advice could be given.

DJJ2 - look around you for the "mother" tree. It could be a garden or two away. The poplar tree two gardens away from me throws up suckers in my flower beds, lawn and even in my greenhouse every year!!
