It won't kill it bu t won't do it any favours. Sumachs sucker all the tme. Some ofthe suckers appear yards away from the parent plant. I'd just cut them off below ground level with a sharp knife.
Hi Jo, if you can sever the suckers from the main root system, glyphosate will work but Sumach is notorious for throwing up suckers all over the place. Another option is to scrape away the soil from the sucker and pull it away from the parent as this removes dormant buds which, if you cut the sucker off, can get left behind to regrow.

Thanks for those answers....I was afraid it was a case of crawling round in the undergrowth , just hoped for an easy option !
