Iris ID please
in Plants
I have had a variegated Iris in my garden that is now starting to look very untidy, It is variegated, so the leaves are quite nice, but the flowers, then they appear are quite insignificant. There are lots of dead/dried leaves amongst those that are still healthy - does it need splitting?, would this improve the flowering ? Should I just lift and bin it ?
Any advice very welcome

I'd need to see a photo to ID it. There are so many different types of iris
What colour are the flowers and what are the seedpods/seeds like?

Lol .... yes, when I tried to ID it yesterday I knew it would be difficult... the leaves are up to 60cm high, yellow and cream striped and the flowers quite insignificant .. not even showing above the leaves, small and dull ... that's as much as I can remember from when it bloomed last year ..
The insignificant flowers makes me think it might be Iris foetidissima variegata. You can pull off any leaves than look rough, split the plant as well. I don't grow the variegated one, mine are the plain green. The leaves look really bad after a while and I discard them as there are always seedling. This won't work with a variegated plant, it won't seed true. You don't mention seeds which are the glory of the plant.
I assume the variegated one is the same

I agree with Nut. The flowers on I. foetidissima are fairly insignificant, but they do produce berries.

Thank you both ... I think I will split this plant up as it has grown bigger somewhat from when I first planted it - and see if I get the seed heads - I must admit I haven't noticed them before.. I wonder now if some 'uninvited' plants that have popped up in other places in my garden would be seedlings .. and as you say not coming through variegated ..
