It's a 'Christmas cactus' Hazel.  Have a look at this RHS link for care:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

could it have been frosted slightly in the porch? it does look like its been under watered,

Christmas cacti aren't true cacti (no spines is the give away), they're more succulents and need a lot more water than normal cacti

  • I used to grow cactus on a large scale but never kept mine in anything other than a terracotta pot and treated them quite mean for watering. I used earth from the garden to grow them in.

  • Have you tried knocking it out of the pot and checking the roots? Possible causes could be Vine Weevil, root aphids, root rot etc

  • I would add mealy bug to that list Mark - they are easily visible and quite easy to squish with fingers.

  • I am not a great computer user, otherwise I would post a picture of a mealy bug for you Hazel - however I can tell you that they are white - a bit like cotton wool and they infest house & greenhouse plants.  They are quite easy to get rid of but tend to come back time again. Let us know what you find after inspecting the roots.
