Plant recommendations for shaded pots.

Hi there

I'm looking or recommendations on plants for potting out in the shade. The pots will be against a wall which is always in the shade spring, autumn, winter and around 70 shade in the summer.

I like the idea of grasses and something colourful.

    Heucheras and lilies should be ok there.

    That's great thankyou so much. I'll look into hackonechloas for sure as we have a Mediterranean type wall and they should look great there.

    Carex oshimensis Evergold is a good grass for pots too - evergreen and straightforward. image

    If you have a big pot, Fatsia japonica does well. A pot keeps it's foliage up off the ground too and really enhances it. 

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Astilbes will need lots of watering if grown in pots.   Fuchsias, both trailing and upright do very well in baskets and pots next to my north facing wall and, of course, loads of hostas and lilies.   Hakonechloa also needs regular watering as it likes damp soil but it will provide a lovely foil to hostas and lilies and moves gracefully in the breeze.

    There is a very big supplier of Heucheras on the web. Not all varieties do equally well and a lot of the recent ones die over winter. 'Caramel' (gold on top, red undersides but no veins) has proved good for me. Some older purple ones can be quite reliable but you will still need to replant about every two years as they get leggy. You'd need to do this in the spring otherwise you will kill the grass, and given that you say the pot is in shade, a sedge rather than a grass would be better--Carex 'Evergold' is a great idea, forms of Carex morrowii in general. I also really like Alan Clark2's idea of lilies--how about 'Red Velvet' for example?
