dogs-killing-grass

Can any one advise me on how to repair my lawn. I have 2 female dogs and their urine has burnt patches in my lawn. I have tried putting new grass seed down but nothing happened.

Any advise would be gratefully recived.

Are you sure the dog isnt repeat offending on the same spot?

The dogs we had while i was a kid always went in the same spots, so the grass never got chance to grow before it was killed again.

You could change the dogs diet slighty, change food type/brands, put more water down, this will help to dilute the excess nitrogen in the dogs urine.

Watering the spot after the dog has done his business will also dilute the urine, although this would require a lot of effort on your part.

  • I've just bought something from the pet shop called Dogrocks,  you put them in their water bowl and after five weeks they are supposed to cure the problem, we are on week two so still a while to go.

if you give the dogs a spot in the garden where they can go and relieve themselves, and reward them when they use it with treats and lots of praise, they should soon get the hang of going where you want them to and leave the rest of your garden alone.

  • Sorry to be a killjoy but as a vet I can assure you that the dog rocks and diet changes are a bit of a con. The best solutions are training to a specific point and living with that being awful or get a bucket of water and wash away each and every pee!

  • I tried dogrocks and they didn't work, someone on the www suggested tomato sauce in the dogs food, that didn't work either.

Watering after is the best answer, or an artificial lawn.

  • Dog rocks have worked for us, but maybe it only works on small dogs!  No brown patches on the lawn at all!

Dog wee is actually really good for your grass just way too strong. Make a point of wetting your lawn every evening and you will find instead of burnt patches there will be tufty areas of grass where it has grown better! image

  • Tip No 1 - Keep a full watering can by and water the spot when you see dog, boy or girl doing a wee.

Tip No 2 - Put a spoon of tomato juice in their dinner. I was told that it works but never tried as have dog no more - unfortunately.

    All the best.
