Yew bush

LynikaLynika Posts: 2

Hello,

I have just moved house and have a very large about 8 ft tall Yew bush in my garden.

Could any one advise me how to trim it and shape it or just give me some ideas as what to do with it!

birds nest in it and I do not really want to be rid of it but it's far too big,at what time of year should I start to trim it and how much can I take off In one go.

Help!

Yew takes to shaping very well; think topiary. Yew hedges are trimmed in the summer, so do it whenever you wish. But if there are birds nesting in it you may not disturb them until the nesting season is over. July.

If birds are nesting leave it until July - but as has been said, Yew responds really well to cutting hard back, so don't worry about doing it. image

And don't worry, you can't 'over do' it - take a look here to give you courage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x5eJGcngks

I have just planted a row of 2ft tall Yews. I've held one back to plant somewhere as a standalone.  I can only dream about it getting massive.  That's a prize asset you have.  If it has pride of place you can dress it for Christmas!
