Too late to cut back cornus Alba aurea?
in Plants

Just received this today and was expecting it would be just a stump - should I still cut this all back (and to where on the photo)? Or is it fine to leave.
I thought for best red stem colour it should be cut back to the ground - seems a third or so is more yellow in colour.
I'm sure the plant will be fine to put in the ground, just won't maybe be quite as red next winter as it could have been?

Yep some buds already so maybe should leave it. Re: the bigger pot, yes it definitely will need one - I was planning on putting into the ground this week, or still too early for this? Should I pot it on for a while yet?
Thanks for your thoughts both. Verdun, if i were to prune, is it every stem back to the main one? Or is it also the main stem back to just above the 2 small ones going off to te left on the picture?
yes, stick it it the ground and cut it right back
Maybe in the reverse order

That's awesome Edd - if only I had the space for something like that!
Maybe I'll post my savagery in a day or two just to double check I've done it ok (still a nervous newbie here.....).
I haven't pruned any of my cornus yet as we've been having a long run of frosts until this morning and I don't like to do major pruning when the wounds can get frozen. They should get done by Easter Monday with any luck and I shall use som eof the stems to try and strike cuttings.

I just watched the video of Joe Swift taking cuttings - think I'll give that a go myself.
In that video he cut the cornus down to about 4-5cm, which would leave me a single stump if I followed suit - is that ok?
