Montana clematis

I have a Montana clematis which I'm trying to grow to cover a pergola. I planted it about 18months ago it's doing okay apart from were it goes into the ground its quite woody Brown in colour but its starting to show shoots all over. Is this common. Do I just let it ramble.how would I fasten it to the pergola. HELP

    I tie my unruly bits of clematis to their supports with green garden twine, very gently. It's older shoots will be brown.

    Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

    I don't know how big your pergola is, but if you weave it in and out and across the sides, tying as you go, you'll create a better framework which will be covered in flowers in future springs. They get big so cover as much of the structure as you can  image

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
