Apple tree with a wound in the bark

I have just inherited an allotment and one of the small apple trees has a deep split in the bark. It is an old wound so too late to treat with a protective wound paint. The soil is heavy with some clay so I am a bit anxious that the tree will be prone to canker if left. Any advice?

If the wound is old and caused by an injury the bark will have sealed the wound and canker won't get into it. Canker gets into fresh wounds caused by pruning or by bird damage while the cut is fresh.
