I remember that too Runny - always associate it with steamed up kitchen windows from all the veggies boiling away. They also chose Tom Jones and his green green grass of home nearly every programme, and it always brought a lump to my throat.
Both men have left us with some very happy memories - which is a tribute in itself.
Cooked veg water was my dads treat, I used to eat the cabbage raw, but mum would always say...don't eat that, it will give you worms. I never understood how that could happen, and I think maybe she said it because times were hard and she couldn't spare it.

? I was given a cup of it every Sunday with my dinner by my mum.
Oh yes, I would recommend it to anyone who has never tried it.....as good as many thin soups I've tried.

Runny I never had added salt to the cabbage water as my mum had already put some in
