a plant for all seasons
Wanting a 6ft - 7ft narrow yet thick tree or shrub which will grow in a large pot - evergreen. Asking too much? Aware hedging, Escala etc may do the trick - wanting to create a bit of a 'wall of trees' for privacy.
Bamboo the way to go - clumps type? - best bamboo which will grow fast?

Or Thuja occidentalis ‘Emerald’, or Nandina Domestica.
nandina domestica is beautiful
Don't plant Bamboo! You'll spend the rest of your life digging it up.
It's not a Berberis, it's a Nandina. Bob didn't mean bamboo was Nandina. He was replying to garjobo.
My daughter has a hedge of bamboo, quite tall, between her lawn and her fence. She says when it grows in her lawn it just gets mowed, it seems quite well behaved, looks good. Think it's Phyllostachys aurea, but that can run so best to put an underground barrier. But if in pots it shouldn't be a problem, would need large pots though.
nandina domestica is a member of the Berberis family.
Yes I knew who he was replying to

I've had my Nandina for over 10 years in alkali soil, it's fine. The RHS says acid, alkali or neutral soil and you can grow it in chalky soil.
I wont argue with the ladies
