Clematis plug plant offer - advice needed
in Plants
I received a four pack of clematis from a Gardeners World offer a month or so ago - and now two of them have grown a few inches and look very healthy. They are in small pots - what should I do with them - they are in a cold GH and I know that they won't survive a hot summer in there - at the moment they are far too tender to put outside - should I pinch the tops off them so that they bush out?

I repotted mine (after advice on here) into 9cm pots with seed and cutting compost, near a sunnyish window, kept them damp and two of them are now like triffids!
Like you, I also wondered if I should pinch them out, or if I should stake them.
Thank you Tetley - I will check the roots tomorrow - and move into larger pots if the roots have filled the 9cm pot. SparklesJD keep me up-to-date with their progress if you can please.
Thanks Tetley - we all make mistakes when we are tired - but good for a laugh! Yes I am pleased with this clematis - it is the best of the four plugs that I received for £5.99 - it must be about 8" tall now and looking very promising.
My triffids. 'Willy' on the right and 'Sunset' on the right.
Montana 'Rubens' on the right and 'Jingle Bells' in the purple pot.
So they are all on the right Sparkles
Your clematis look good SparklesJD - all four of them - I only have two which are growing well and one that is just starting to shoot - the fourth doesn't look like there is any life in it at all. Are you plants in a heated GH - mine is cold but has reach almost 30 degrees today. I must check the roots too.
Lyn - one of those days! 'For those of you watching in black and white, the one in the blue pot is a clematis. As are the ones in green, pink and purple.'
Nope, they're indoors at the moment. I read somewhere not to put the small plugs outside until risk of frost had passed, although it's more than possible that I mixed up different bits of advice! I have got a plastic growhouse so they might end up in there as I'm running out of room.
Yellow pot = 'Willy'
Pink = 'Sunset'
Blue = 'Rubens'
Purple = 'Jingle Bells'
Rubens was a stump of nothingness and one of the others wasn't much better until about a week ago, then it grew overnight.
So there is hope for the no show clematis yet - I mustn't be so impatient ..... I read some advice on here that advise not to plant the clematis in their final growing place until next year - to keep them in pots this year to establish - personally I think the two strongest plug plants will be ready to plant out in a couple of months time
