Been given some old very big dahlias, about 50 to 60 cm across. They are dry and have been stored in hessian bags.  What should I do with them?

I'd split them ready for replanting in Spring, if it ever arrives.

How would you split them? they are one big lump could I cut them into say 4 or would that make the other bit rot?

You can only split them if you can find distinct shoots, so that each clump will develop separate shoots. I wait until you can see developing "eyes", which will be the new shoots.

Verdun   there is about 15 to 20 stems on each one. They are to big to pull apart and may even be to big to cut with a knife I may have to cut them with a spade into four then try tidying them with a knife.
