holly choice

nutcutletnutcutlet Posts: 27,350

I'm extending my mixed hedge. Most of the stuff I've found around the garden and in my nursery collection but I can't find any spare hollies about the place.

I'd like a couple of free berrying females and a white/green variegated male. I quite like the ones with prickles on the surface of the leaf.

Any suggestions welcome re cultivar? pleaseimage

SilverQueen is a good variegated male Holly with white margins. Amother interesting variant I grew at work was Bacciflava which had yellow berries. It is a very vigorous variety.

  • I've always hankered after an Ilex Handsworth New Silver (female with creamy white edges and purple stems and new shoots).

Disappointed to find the hedgehogs are sterile. I need something to pollinate the females.

except for the pollinating bit Tetley, I need berries on the female, or my birds do anyway. Might still have to get one though.image
