Hollyhocks

I read somewhere that you should put coal ashes around the base of the hollyhock plant once you have cut it back for the winter (post flowering, seeding etc).  Does anyone know what this means?  Is it literally ashes from a coal fire?  I would have thought that would be toxic!  Any help gratefully received.

Never heard that one. I would have thought you were right about the toxic.

Woodash is supposed to be good for someting but I can't remember what.
