Pruning hibiscus and magnolia

Hi, I wonder if anyone has experience of pruning hibiscus and magnolias?  Both of mine have grown enormously in the 2 years since I've moved in to my house and they are starting to overpower the rest of the planting.

I guess I need to know the best time of year to prune and how hard they can be pruned - I suspect neither are too happy about a heavy lopping...?!

It is not usually recommended to prune magnolias as you may get a forest of 'water shoots.'  If it must be reduced in size take whole branches out, rather than a light going-over.
