Eggplant Seedlings

Hi there,

I planted some 'black beauty' eggplant seeds from Mr. Fothergills about a month ago and all other seedlings that have popped up, I have been able to confirm that they are what I planted. The eggplant however, I am not sure. I am a tad worried that they may be weeds, but they also kind of look like eggplant seedlings that I have seen through google images. Can anyone confirm? Thankyou image

  • Hi Chrystal image

Those don't look like the leaves of aubergines I've grown in the past - my plants had darker more toothed leaves.

Whereabouts are you?  I wouldn't expect aubergines to be growing outside in the UK at this time of year ..... but it's been a funny season image

  • Sorry, I should have ellaborated, I am in Australia. I did check the seed packet and it said that in the particular climate I'm in (sub-tropical) it should be fine to sow the seeds at this time of year.
I thought that maybe the seed-ish looking thing at the top of the plant may have been a give-away as to whether it is in fact eggplant. I'm a bit of a newby when it comes to gardening image

  • Ah, that's ok then ....... I was perplexed by planting aubergines in the winter in the UK LOL!

I've not grown a lot of them, so am by no means an expert - let's see what others think as they come along (I'm up early this morning).

I don't think these are aubergines. I don't recognise them but I don't know subtropical plants

  • They look a bit like Physalis image  (Chinese lantern, Cape gooseberry etc).  Solanaceae so related to aubergines image

Enlarge the first pic and have a look at what's growing up in the middle.

Nothing Solanaceae there, more like Beta

  • Gotcha Nut!  hadn't enlarged that one... duh!

I wonder if Chrystal has a list of the seeds she sowed?

    Spearmint ?

  • I've blown up the pic as much as I can to see if the stems look square like mint - don't think they do but it's all a bit blurry image

Also my spearmint leaves are narrower and more 'spear-like' than those.

  • Thankyou for the responses, had a gardening nut over and it appears that I've been giving all of my affections to weeds.. Doh!
Have replanted the aubergines, so hopefully better luck this time!
