Soil Preperation

I have cleared an area for new planting this year and was wondering what is the best prep for the soil. Should I be digging something in or is it too early at the moment.Thank you.

Thanks Verdun, prompt, sound advice as per. Could you please clarify 'a spits depth'. Incidentally, I did dig in some well rotted horse manure before winter.

a " spit" is the depth of the blade of the spade.

  • How thick should I apply ashes to the earth? Or is it better off in the compost heap?

where has the ash come from? Bonfire ash is best if it's from twiggy garden material. Ash from seasoned logs burnt in a woodburner is also good, but not coal ash. V bad.

  • No, it is from a woodburner. In fact, it is wood from a local plumb tree. I don't want to waste it, obviously, but it is the first time I want to apply it directly to the soil.

I add mine to the compost heap , but I'm sure others add it directly. They'll be along later.
